Rose enjoys some free time

Rose inhaled deeply, breathing in the fresh air and all the interesting scents it carried. She had a free afternoon and evening and fully intended to spend the better part of it running through the woods on four legs. Now she just needed a nice and safe place to put her clothes and she could transform...

Loki had originally meant to catch up with the manor's feline population, but when he'd ducked out of sight behind a few bushes and changed into his cat form he'd smelled something unexpected. Something canine that frightened the cat, but excited the god.

It smelled like wolf!

Loki loved wolves. Not only was one of his children a wolf, but his brother kept two that had been his frequent playmates and travelling companions. Perhaps ...

But no, once he'd changed into his wolf shape he soon realised that this wolf was a stranger to him. Another female, too, but that didn't matter. She hadn't changed because she wanted to mate.

Sniffing excitedly Loki followed the smell deeper into the forest.

After hiding her clothes in a hollow tree, Rose changed into Cloud and shook herself vigorously. That felt good! She stretched her body and then started sniffing the air and the ground, looking for interesting trails. Maybe she could catch a nice juicy rabbit for dinner?

Ah yes, there she was! A young female alone without a pack? Poor thing!

But lucky for Loki. Surely she wanted company.

Remembering that she might also be frightened by the sudden appearance of a stranger however, Loki stepped out between the trees slowly and then stopped in plain sight, sniffing to demonstrate her curiosity but not approaching further.

Cloud could tell that she was getting closer to the rabbit she was hunting when she registered the presence of another. The other had the advantage, wind-wise, but the small wafts of scent at least told Cloud two things: it was a wolf and not one that she knew. That could be good or bad, but she was relieved that it wasn't someone from the London pack looking for her.

When the other wolf - a female too - emerged between the trees Cloud studied her body language intently coming to the conclusion that this stranger wasn't a danger right now. So she sniffed the air and wagged her tail cautiously, ready to see what would happen.

Yes, she was wagging at her!

Loki stepped a little closer raised her tail and wagged back. She knew she'd better not rush this and frighten this lonely girl.

What could have happened to her pack? There was no visible or smellable reason for her to be cast out by her kin, nor did she look scarred or starved enough to be the sole survivor of some catastrophe.

Yes, the wolf wagged right back at her!

Cloud took three slow careful steps closer and scented the air again. There seemed to be a whiff of... carrots? The surprise even slowed the wagging of Cloud's tail.

She was big, though, bigger than most wolves Loki knew and there was a hint of a human smell about her. Perhaps she was part dog and somebody's pet? In that case she'd probably never known what it was to have a pack!

Now her wagging was slowing down. Was she having second thoughts about 'talking to strangers'?

Loki whined a little and increased her own wagging, hoping to convey that she didn't mind the dog heritage. She liked dogs just fine, though she didn't have any close friends or relatives that were dogs.

The whining snapped Cloud out of her surprise, or at least enough so that the wagging sped up again. This wolf was interesting after all, and it had been an awfully long time since Cloud had had the opportunity to play with another wolf, wer or not.

The scent of carrots didn't signify danger, so Cloud pushed it to the back of her mind and instead stepped a bit closer again to inhale more of the foreign scent and get to know this wolf better.

The whining stopped. Loki was relieved that she'd been able to reassure the other wolf.

She wasn't as good as she ought to have been at interpreting smell, the human shape she used most of the time having next to no sense of smell at all, but it was of course only polite to return the friendly sniffing.

What she could tell from that was that there was some human smell on the other wolf. She'd been right about the dog blood then. This wolf clearly wasn't even wild. She must be the pet of some considerate person who knew that wolves needed to run and hunt for themselves whenever possible.

Cloud waited until the other wolf had scented her as well, then she wagged her tail and crouched down on her front legs, issuing a very clear invitation to play.

Chasing each other through the woods, tumbling and wrestling, would be so much fun!

Delightedly Loki wagged her tail as well and pounced at her new friend with a pretend growl, that was however far from her fiercest. She wanted to be sure it was clear that she was pretending after all.

Cloud jumped back in time, then growled in return, snapped her jaws as close to the other wolf as possible and took off, trying to entice the other into chasing her.

Loki bounded after her snapping playfully at her heels.

This was fun!

Cloud jumped over a bush and ran on, trying to gauge the right speed to evade her new playmate for a time. No use in letting the other female think she was slow or weak. But Cloud fully intended to be caught at some time, so they could wrestle a bit and then chase each other again...

Oh yay, an obstacle race!

One glance at the bush told Loki that she'd lose too much time crawling through under it, so she too jumped. A high jump, though her new friend had made it look effortless. She wondered vaguely just how much higher the younger female could jump, but it didn't matter. They were friends and not competing for scarce food.

And ... ah, there she went. Loki stretched her leaps to catch up. How good it felt to stretch her legs and feel the wind in her face again. It really had been too long since she'd used this shape.

The other wolf was gaining on her, Cloud noted. Good. She could run all day but with a playmate present that wasn't her goal.

She ducked low and passed unter a fallen tree, then ran on, conscious that her new friend would soon reach her.

This time Loki took a minor detour to jump over the tree at a lower point, then increased her speed to catch up again.

It seemed her playmate was either hesitant or incapable of catching up to her and tackling her. So when Cloud reached a nice clearing, she skidded to a stop and in the same motion turned around to face her pursuer, ready to jump her and play-wrestle with her...

Loki had not expected her new friend to stop and barged into the clearing with too much speed to stop - Oh well, she leaped at the other wolf instead hoping that she would understand it as play and not a sudden attack.

Cloud met her new friend in mid-air and immediately tried to get the upper hand, intending to end up on top once they hit the ground...

While Loki assumed the other wolf to be less experienced than herself she was bigger and Loki was still slightly underweight after the severe illness of her human shape giving the other an advantage Loki had not calculated on.

She only just managed to twist aside a little as they fell so that he wasn't completely buried under her opponent's weight.

Well, that wolf wasn't easy to catch which made the game all the more fun. Cloud managed to end up on her own four paws - more or less - but not as firmly on top of the other as she had intended.

Cloud quickly turned around to aim for the other wolf's throat - not to hurt, just to establish dominance with a firm grip.

This move was very much expected, the logical next step.

Loki opened her own mouth and snapped upwards as if intending to go for her new friend's throat as well, though she actually only meant to protect her own neck while she twisted sideways hoping to swipe away the other wolf's legs on this side and tumble her over.

Cloud tumbled to the side, narrowly missing the other's throat as her paws were swept from underneath her.

She shook herself briefly and pounced again, trying to gain dominance over her new friend, aiming for the throat again.

Loki rolled back onto her paws, jumped aside to avoid the second attack and then pounced herself hoping to land on top this time.
