It still made Jan nervous that he could feel Benjamin’s presence almost every time he left or returned to his room. Surely the other immortal could feel him too and what if he passed any information about his habits he learned from it on to McLeod?

He still hoped that Benjamin was more neutral than on McLeod’s side, but he was an immortal ...

Whatever Benjamin’s intentions towards him were, though, Jan couldn’t let them keep him from his shooting practice. He steeled himself and walked out of his room.

"Ah, but there's a difference between lying to yourself and finding out that someone else has lied to you. And I've never been good with people."

Methos shrugged. "Just as long as you don't get overly attached to them. Those mortals have an impractical way of dying all the time."

"True," Jan confirmed. "But they are the only safe people to be around - and personally, I like to stay safe."

He unintentionally glanced at his missing thumb again and looked away.

"What do we do about the water in the other guests' rooms? Report it or pretend nothing happened?" he asked vaguely remembering similar mishaps back in their university days.

Methos considered for a moment, then he laughed. "Pretend," he decided. "I don't want to be the one explaining to the hotel staff how exactly it happened. Specifically since I don't exactly know how it happened."

Jan shook his head, but couldn't completely repress his laugh. Same old Benjamin.

"Then, I think we'd better change into dry clothes before someone sees us. And then make sure we aren't here when Miss Heerkens cleans this floor."

Methos nodded. "Let's do that," he agreed. "And spend as much of the day outdoors as we can so we won't accidentally walk into her at the worst possible moment."

The word outdoors reminded Jan that he still wasn't sure how far from the house he could dare to go.

"Where exactly outside where you thinking of?" he asked, his hand on the doorknob.

"Away from Ms. Heerkens' eyes, I'd say." He thought for a moment. "Maybe the village?"

The village? With another immortal - even if it was Benjamin ... No!

"I'd rather not leave the grounds," he said. "Not with McLeod and Dawson here. I don't want a fight."

Should he suggest the shooting range? Was he good enough to let Benjamin see him shoot?

Methos barely suppressed a chuckle.

"Dawson would cut off his own hand before he cuts out any of our heads. And Duncan didn't even take my head when I offered it to him on a silver platter. You're very safe from fights with both, no matter where you go."

He sighed.

"But oh, well, okay, the grounds it is, then."

"I'm sorry I'm so troublesome," Jan apologised. "But I just can't bring myself to suddenly trust strangers."

Then he darted into his room to change quickly before they were caught after all.
