What book?

Summary: Gabriel comes to check on Raphael.

Still feeling rather annoyed with Belial, Gabriel climbed the stairs, Communicating with the Archangel Gabriel for Inspiration and Reconciliation still in his hand. He paused outside his door for a moment before moving to knock on Michael's door instead.

Raphael had better not have found some new way to hurt himself.

"Michael? May I come in?"

Michael sighed. "Fiiiiine. I'm really feeling fine, you know. Not even stiff."

He spotted the book out of the corner of his eye and wanted to grab it, but Gabriel was too focused on him now. Nothing in the world was more funny to an angel than what humans had made up about them...

"Michael, if someone decapitated you, your head would still be insisting that you were fine."

Gabriel ran his fingers lightly over Michael's chest and back. He was barely able to see and feel the scars. "Although for now, I'll believe you."

Michael pouted. "That's so not true. I know my own limits."

The book was speaking to him. He wanted to seeeeeeeeeee it.

"So, how're you?"

"Right," Gabriel raised an eyebrow at him. "And Belial will let a chance to make some lewd comment go by."

He leaned forward to tuck the errant lock of red hair behind Raphael' ear again. "I'm fine, when not worrying about you or Raphael. My feathers have almost completely grown back."

Touching the dressing on Raphael's back lightly, he concentrated on willing healing power into the wound, keeping it soothing enough to not wake Raphael.

Yessssss he was distracted!

"Don't even bring that slut up," Michael said, trying to sound inconspicuous as he leaned to grab the book. "By which I mean the demon, not Raphael. At least not as far as I know about Raphael. But that would be really weird."

Awesome. Grabbed it.

... she visited the Virgin Mary...

... she...

... SHE...

"WOAH GABRIEL THIS BOOK SAYS YOU'RE A CHICK!" he exclaimed. "IT'S EVEN BETTER BECAUSE THE BIBLE BIT AT THE BEGINNING SAYS YOU'RE A DUDE!"

"Oh no, not you too." Gabriel made a grab for the book, not even bothering to try not to wake Raphael. Michael's exclamation would have woken the dead.

"You know, I blame you for the humans' idea that I'm female!"

Raphael jerked awake and instinctly flailed as if trying to yank out his no-longer-in-Existence weapon. Upon realizing there was no danger, he merely blinked his sleepy eyes in confusion. "What's going on? Is everything okay?"

"No it isn't! Help me grab that book, please," Gabriel responded, bracing himself with a hand on Michael's shoulder as he tried to grab it.

"Oh. Okay." Raphael yawned and reached over to do just that, wondering what could possibly be in the book to cause such a fuss.

Michael bolted from the room, book in hand. To make it clear that he was making an awesome escape, he laughed maniacally as he did so.

He blinked blearily at the retreating angel. "Hnng?"

"Your brother's an idiot and so am I for leaving that book within ten metres of him. Sorry we woke you. MICHAEL MIKHA'EL, GET BACK HERE!" Gabriel leapt from the bed and ran after Michael; he was normally faster than Michael - though the Warrior was far stronger, of course - but Michael had the head start here.

And what was with the insane laughter?

The insane laughter was awesome, of course.

"YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME ALIVE!" he called back, sprinting as fast as he could.

He could understand Gabriel being faster in the air - his wings were larger and he was lighter - but it always bugged him that Gabriel could out-sprint him too. Michael's legs were longer and he was stronger! He should be able to be faster!

But the head start was his, and once he got outisde ----

Gabriel would be able to fly and catch him in the air.

He reached the bottom of the steps and began making his way to the basement.

Despite himself, Gabriel began to smile as he ran after Michael. "I'll be talking to your ghost soon, then!"

He had chosen not to take to the air. Smart.

Raphael blinked at them retreating. He wanted to chase after them but he knew they would get upset if he did anything strenuous. Oh, well. He rolled over and went back to sleep.

The basement was dark, so Michael hid in a corner and pulled out the book, squinting hard to get some reading done before Gabriel inevitably followed him downstairs.

Gabriel would have been content if Michael didn't see page 7*. He followed Michael's aura down to the basement and paused for a moment to get his bearings and to sense where Michael was.

"There are books about you too, you know," he called. "With rather odd tales."

* Aside from the fact that in most of the book Gabriel was portrayed as female... The experience of the Sufi Ruzbehan Baqli was totally different: "In the first rank I saw Gabriel, like a maiden, or like the moon amongst the stars. His hair was like a woman's, falling in long tresses. He wore a red robe embroidered in green... He is the most beautiful of Angels... His face is like a red rose." Gabriel's face had certainly been the colour of a red rose upon seeing that.

Michael merely hummed in response, reading from the beginning, curled up in the corner. He knew he was going to get caught; it was all a matter of reading as much as he could before Gabriel broke that book over his head (somehow).

"AAAH HA HA HA HA HA HA THE BOOK SAYS YOU GOT GIRL HAIR AND YOU'RE A MAIDEN AND BEAUTIFUL AND" He couldn't talk anymore, he was laughing so hard.

Actually, Gabriel wouldn't hit Michael with a book; he wouldn't want to damage the book, after all.

Even if he hadn't been able to sense where Michael was, the laughter would have made him impossible to miss, and he broke into a run. Oh no, he did see page seven.

Skidding to a stop just in front of Michael, he folded his arms and glared down at the laughing Warrior.

"I blame you for all the rumours that I'm female. Hand over the book."

Michael handed over the book, still snickering. "I had nothing to do with those," he managed. "Don't ask me where they came from! You know I don't go on Earth all that much. If anyone's to blame it's Aziraphael!"

If the Nerd had in fact started the rumour that Gabriel was female, he might have to respect him a little bit.

Gabriel was about to say that Aziraphale would never, but then he stopped and thought about it.

"I think I'll need to have a little chat with him one of these days."

He took the book. "Are you coming or are you going to spend the night in the basement?"

Michael stood up, stretching. "Thanks for that. I needed a good laugh." He paused. "What did you even come in for, anyway? I don't even remember."

At that, Gabriel promptly smacked his shoulder. "I came in to see that Raphael was alright, and to check your wounds. And I was carrying the book because I didn't want to leave it in the library. Belial was far too amused when he came across it."

"Do you want me to 'tell him to quit pestering you'?" Michael asked seriously. He'd do it too, if Gabriel asked him, rules here be da --- darned.

(It's not like he'd even met Adam anyway, so who knew if he even enforced those rules?)

Gabriel smiled a little. "I really appreciate the offer, but no. He'd provoke you into attacking him, and then Adam might make you leave. And for some unfathomable reason, I'd miss you."

"Well, it's nice to know you don't pick up on subtext," Michael said with a shrug. And then he poked Gabriel's side. "You'd miss me because I'm awesome, duh. And I'd miss you because without nagging my life would be meaningless!"

Gabriel squirmed away; he was ticklish. "I do not nag you. I merely point things out. And what subtext?" Michael had always been protective, after all.

"Well, by 'tell him to quit bugging you' I really meant 'beat the ever-living crap out of him,'" Michael explained. "So no, there would be no goading. It would just be 'pick up demon, take outside, pwn.' Simple, yet effective."

He wasn't going to call him on the nag thing, because that really didn't justify a response. Gabriel, not nagging. Heehee!

Gabriel grinned. "I suppose it was too much to hope that you would at least attempt to talk things out like a civilised being."

"It's Belial," he countered. "Anything approaching civilised with him involves far too much nudity. I'd rather just punch him, 'k thanks."

Gabriel held his hands up in a 'surrender' position. "Alright, alright. No punching, Michael. I don't want you to get thrown out."

"Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. Way to take the fun out of everything." Michael stuck his tongue out at him.

Gabriel looked at him for a moment. Then he produced a lollipop from thin air and handed it to him. "Keep doing that and your face will be stuck that way."

"Fiiiinally." Michael happily sucked on his lollipop.

Gabriel shook his head, fondly, and turned to leave. "If you're plannig to stay here, I can tell everyone we really do have a monster in the basement and that it can be appeased by sweets."

Michael gestured for Gabriel to lead the way, now that he had his lollipop. Really, he'd do anything for sweets. Stupid human body... and delicious human treats...

Laughing, Gabriel led the way back to their rooms. He paused outside their doors. "Goodnight. And, you know, thanks for all that you do for Raphael."

Gabriel nodded. "Yes, well. You've been a really good brother to him; I thought you should know I appreciate it. Goodnight."

He hesitated for a moment before entering his own room; he'd have hugged Michael once and thought nothing of it, but these days he second-guessed anything to do with the Warrior.
