Summary: Rose starts working by cleaning the hallways

Her first night here hadn't been too bad and Rose reckoned she should start earning money. So she used the existing supplies, namely a bucket with water and a cleaning solution and a mop, to scrub the hallway floors, starting on the ground floor and moving upstairs. She wanted to do this properly. No use in getting fired her first day...

"Your family doesn't support you?" Loki asked, making his voice sympathetic.

"I didn't ask them for support. I don't need much."

Rose shrugged

"And as long as I always find a job before I'm completely out of money there won't be a problem."

"I guess so," Loki said. "So what do you do when you're not cleaning hallways?"

This would be more difficult than with Mary, it seemed.

That was a good question. What would she do when she wasn't working. She knew what she'd prefer: changeing into her fur-form and roaming the woods and meadows nearby. But that was out of the question.

"I don't know yet. Any recommendations? You seem to have been here longe than I"

"I haven't been here for long either," Loki admitted. "So I guess we could always roam the town, see what they offer. I don't assume you'd enjoy a game of dice or cards?"

The way she was taking the nature of the inhabitants in stride, he had some doubts about her being an average human. If she was hiding some ability or family relationship that might help him in his plans, he was going to find out about it sooner or later. Spending some time with her would be a start.

And if she was just a normal human after all?

Well, in that case she'd provide some entertainmend and fun, once she stopped being so apprehensive of him. They all did, sooner or later.

"The town stinks" Rose said before she could think about it. She shrugged.

"I much prefer woods. Or grass under my feet. The bigger the town the less I like it.

And I've never played a game of dice or cards."

Cards would only get chewed on on the farm and dice might be swalloed by a curious cub after all...

Loki chuckled softly. "Would you like to learn?" he asked. "I have both a set of dice and a couple of decks of cars. And really - Lower Tadfield isn't exactly London. And neither is Upper Tadfield, I believe."

Rose didn't have to think long about that question.

"Sure, why not."

She always liked learning new things and maybe these games were a unsuspicious way to occupy herself when she wasn't working.

"And when I walked through that town, Lower Tadfield, it still stank. Not as bad as London but not pleasant either."

"Well," Loki said, "You have one hell of a good nose, then."

He fumbled in his pocket for a set of dice. "Here's the rules. You place a bet. Each of the players throws the dice, the one getting the highest number wins. Or you can determine a number in advance, and the one getting closest wins. Or you throw a set of five dice, not two, and different combinations win. That's like - number pairs are lowest, then three same numbers. A straight is what you call a series of numbers counting up. So - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Then there's full house - that's three of one number and two of another. Four of one number is the second most valuable, and five of a number is the ultimate winner."

"Maybe it's just that I'm country-bred and my nose doesn't agree with the smells typical for towns..."

Rose looked at the dice and listened to Loki. There were people who sat together betting on what results they would get rolling the dice? Strange idea. But she would need something to do when she wasn't working. Something that didn't sream 'wer' at the top of its lungs. So maybe a game of dice was a good idea.

"How do you normally play, with two or with five dice?" she asked Loki.

"I play whatever is called for in any given situation," Loki said. "I don't really mind one way or the other. Which one soudns more intersting to you?"

He gave her his most winning smile, the one that had charmed Sister Mary so nicely.

Rose smiled hesitantly back, keeping her teeth covered, and shrugged.

"I don't know this game yet, but maybe it's more interesting with five dice? I'd like to try it that way..."
