  "Yes, dear, I understand completely. Don't you worry yourself, I'll be down there as soon as I can, there's a lovely girl in here now who's been such a help, I'm sure she can handle the hotel for a few days. My deepest condolences, the poor dear, she must miss her mother terribly. I do hope it wasn't too painful for them, at the end - oh, you have to go?  He's calling already? Goodbye, I'll see you at the station tomorrow, then - " There was a click as the woman on the other end hung up, " - oh, how rude, really."

  Now, all Rose would have to do was spend a little more time at the reception desk. Mary would have to hurry with the packing if she intended to be at Cousin Beatrice's by the next day, only now she supposed it was her daughter Rachel's now, the poor girl, she had always seemed quiet and close to her mother, what she must be going through with that good-for-nothing father...

"I'll simply have to have a few words with him," Mary muttered to herself as she went in search of Rose. Ah, there she was. "Rose! I'm so sorry, dear girl, but something has come up, a cousin of mine has died and I simply must go down as soon as possible."
