Dream arrives
Date: March 12, 2003
Place: Lobby of Tadfield Manor (via dream, upper tadfield and a muddy field)
Status: Public - COMPLETE
Summary: The Lord of Dreams arrives
Daniel finally found the dream he was looking for. He felt sure he should have been able to do it quicker. Quicker than the 10 nights of dreaming he managed. He had been searching for a dreamer whose physical location in the world was close to a portion of the dreaming that he had been sealed away from.
He was sure his predecessor would have taken no time to do this. And possibly wouldn't have even needed the dream, but Daniel was still new to his powers. He knew what he could do. He had the full knowledge of his predecessor but it wasn't knowledge that he knew, it was more like knowledge that he had in a book that he could read but didn't necessarily understand fully.
He stopped in the dream long enough to ensure the dreamer revisited a happy memory from his childhood, an unrecognised reward for the help that he had unknowingly offered. And then he stepped through the thin skin that sat between the waking world and the dreaming and found himself on a quiet street outside a house, curtains drawn tight against the unexpected dawn sunlight that shone coldly in the crisp, cold morning.
He felt around for a while and before long he could sense it in the distance, an invisible line beyond which he could just feel the dreamers but no more, their dreams hidden from his view. The barrier was not as close as he had intended. He felt a moment of disappointment at his lack of abilities but contented himself with the knowledge that he was already vastly more capable than he had been a mere few weeks ago...
As he walked down the street, his senses leading him towards the center of the disruption he looked around at the world around him. He realised that it was the first time he had properly walked in the waking world. He had only been a baby when he had ascended to his position as Lord of Dreams and most of his time since then had been spent putting his realm back into order again.
The place looked so different from the sort of places he walked through in dream. To his right a poster on a lamppost urged him to "Save Upper Tadfield Post Office". Dreams rarely had anything as mundane as government spending cutbacks as this poster proclaimed. Maybe in a bureaucrat's nightmares actually...
He passed through Upper Tadfield and set out on the direct route to where he was headed. He walked over the fields and as he did realised his robes were not just impractical but would probably look very conspicuous. It took a moment of concentration to change his clothes. Instead of the patterned white robes that were slowly picking up mud from the ground he pictured more practical clothing, light blue well worn jeans, sturdy walking boots and a thick white shirt. As he pictured the his robes faded out, soon forgotten like a dream and in their place he wore the more practical clothing.
His journey took him into Lower Tadfield. All around him he could feel his sense being blocked from the dreamers around him though by this time there were very few people still asleep. He thought he could probably summon the power he needed to push into their dreams but he wasn't sure that he could do it without hurting the dreamers.
Now he was here he felt something else. Somewhere nearby there was a gathering of powers. It seemed more than coincidence so it seemed a good place to start his investigation.
He changed his path smiling at the daffodils growing alongside the road up to, according to the signpost, Tadfield Manor hotel. He picked up a few flowers that seemed to have been crushed under what looked like tank tracks, something that seemed more at home in a dream than in this quiet little country road. He walked and before long came in sight of the hotel.
He dropped the flowers by the side of the road and stopped for a moment to gather his composure. He could feel that this was where the confluence of power was and part of him didn't want to face that. He knew though that as long as he kept his guard up that nothing would be able to hurt him.
The car park contained a few vehicles but not many for a building this size. It was a short walk across the car park before he entered the hotel lobby. After a short pause he sat down on a worn chair and picked up a magazine on the table. It seemed to him that this would be a good place to find out who the powerful beings here were as they came and went.
