Trying to change your direction in mid-leap was not always a good idea. While he tried to stay in the angel's path and not be hit by the paint at the same time, he tripped on something and stumbled.
He grabbed for the first part of the angel he could get a hold of, as much to keep himself upright as to hold him back.
